Try this PPA, Luka is a KIPI-Plugin committer and also sometimes helps with digiKam. I guess these packages should be ok...

What exactly does it do?

? I guess you either ment "What does HE do" or "What does the package do"?
In the first case:
He is writing patches for digiKam

and in the second case:
The package will install the latest digiKam version for Ubuntu / Debian based systems without the need to compile the source.

That's what I meant Smiley
Really cool, very nice link.
Unfortunately, I was searching for Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04) packages. The ppa only shares Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10) packages. I already found a lot of sources for Karmic DEBs, but not a single one for Jaunty...

As it happens I had to install Digikam 1.1.0 on Jaunty last night, and in the end it was very easy.  Steps I followed were:
1) sudo apt-get install digikam (optional - this installs the old 0.10 version and is just done here to ensure all the base KDE stuff is already handled  & intended to minimise later difficulties)
2) sudo apt-get build-dep digikam (this gets the dependencies for 0.10 not 1.1.0 but seems sufficient).
3) sudo apt-get build-dep kipi-plugins (might as well do this at the same time)
Now you can obtain the Digikam and Kipi-Plugin tar files from the Digikam site and compile those with the instructions on the download page itself. There are only about four commands to issue but you can drink a big cup of coffee while the compile runs ...

Mmhh, sounds almost too easy Wink
But I guess why: I tried to compile it when digiKam moved from 0.09 to 0.10. That was the point where the changed to QT4. So the dependencies from 0.09 were not sufficient. That might be the reason why 0.10 is enough for 1.0 and it's really only this configure-make stuff.

After your steps: Do you have 0.10 and 1.0 simultaneously running on your machine? That would be the cherry on the cake Smiley

Thanks so far!

No I don't have both running at once - I don't even know if that would be possible due to the library differences.

Although actually I did have both running for a while when I had 0.10 on Jaunty and 1.1 in a Kubuntu Karmic virtual box - but I guess that isn't quite what you mean :-)  (Its a very good way to try out a new version though)
