Hi everybody.

I recently found this great videopodcast.

As you know, "the feed contains only the last ten shows". So, what I did, was to download the rest from the podcast's site(this site). The problem is, though, that itunes can't see them as podcasts. When i try to add them to the itunes library, it thinks that it's just a regular video. I tried a couple of ways but without success.

Does anyone know how to add them in as podcasts into the right album?

thanks in advance!
alex

P.S.:

1) Sorry for my english.
2) I hope that I picked the right place to write this post.
3) I know, the name of the topic sucks. [EDIT by Rolf: I have changed it to something more specific]

I got a mail from Francesco:

Regarding the iTunes problem here are my 2 cents.
iTunes stores all the information about the music library and the subscriptions to podcasts into an xml file (on a mac it's located under /Users/*username*/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Libray.xml, on windows I don't know).
If someone wants to manually add episodes he has to edit this file. It's not impossible but it's not that simple even.
I suggest trying to understand it and modify it with a backup copy of the original file.

My questions:

- are there podcasts who have a full entry in iTunes with 50+ episodes?

- is iTunes keeping track of back episodes? So that somebody who had started subscribing a year ago has all the files?

- what is there a way to import such a file into iTunes? I am sure one (not me ;-) ) could write a PHP script to generate such an XML file for the back episodes.

I hate not being able to see all my podcast files in the podcast entry in iTunes, so I found this method:

  • First, download and install Mp3tag (free, portable tag editor).
  • Next, download and save this text file I have created with all the proper tags defined.
  • Run Mp3Tag and change the directory to your Meet the Gimp directory that contains all the video files.
  • Click the button on the toolbar called "Text File - Tag".
  • Browse to your downloaded text file (see above), and set the Format String to:
Code:
%artist%  -  %album%  -  %title%  -  %track%  -  %year%  -  %genre%  -  %comment%  -  %subtitle%  -  %itunespodcast%  -  %itunespodcastdesc%  -  %itunespodcasturl%  -  %itunespodcastid%
  • Click OK, then click the Save toolbar button to write out the tag information.
  • Finally, remove any Meet The Gimp entries from iTunes (Keep files!!!), then in iTunes, click File > Add Folder and select your MTG video files folder.  It should add these to the Podcast listing, and subscribe you back to the live podcast.  Now all old entries stay there, but new ones get added as normally.

Hope this helps!

Also:

Yep.  It all depends (as I understand it) how you set up the feed.

- is iTunes keeping track of back episodes? So that somebody who had started subscribing a year ago has all the files?
This depends on a setting in iTunes - you can have it automatically remove podcasts after listening.

- what is there a way to import such a file into iTunes? I am sure one (not me ;-) ) could write a PHP script to generate such an XML file for the back episodes.
That XML file is pretty awful - I have found that editing the MP3 tags is more effective (see post above).

I'll have a look how long feedburner lets a feed grow. It's their bandwidth, not mine.... ;-)

For what it is worth, I know that Scott Sigler (horror author and podcasting giant) uses feedburner (or at least did for some time) and he has hundreds of episodes in his feed going back a couple years.

I checked in the iTunes store, and it looks like there are still a limited number of back episodes available...   Undecided
